What Were Comics?

Coloring the Avengers

April 22, 2015  /  Bart Beaty

A very interesting piece has just gone live over at The Wall Street Journal. Essentially, they have reduced the colour palette on five decades worth of Avengers covers to sixty-four colours (eliminating black and white) and then arranged them chromatically in comparative images like the one above. You can mouse over individual strips to see the original covers. It's all quite nicely displayed, and I think it begins to scratch the surface of some of the things that can be done with a large data set to display changes in comic book production over time. Definitely one to check out for yourself!
